Candle Making 101

Candle Making 101: A Beginner's Guide

Candles have been used for centuries for a variety of reasons, from lighting homes to spiritual practices. Making your own candles is a great way to personalize your home decor and create a relaxing ambiance. In this blog post, we will go over the basics of candle making and provide you with some tips to get started.

Materials:

  • Wax (such as soy wax)

  • Fragrance oils (optional)

  • Dye (optional)

  • Heat-safe container (such as a mason jar)

  • Double boiler or a heat-resistant bowl and a pot

  • Thermometer

  • Stirring utensil (such as a wooden spoon)

  • Scissors

Steps:

  1. Prepare your workspace: Cover your work surface with newspaper or a disposable tablecloth. Gather all of your materials and tools.

  2. Melt the wax: Place the wax in a double boiler or a heat-resistant bowl over a pot of boiling water. Melt the wax until it reaches a temperature of around 180-190°F. Use a candy thermometer to measure the temperature.

  3. Prepare the container: While the wax is melting, prepare your container by placing the wick in the center. You can use a wick sticker or a glue gun to secure it in place.

  4. Add fragrance and dye (optional): If you want to add fragrance or color to your candle, now is the time to do it. The amount of fragrance oil will depend on the amount of wax you are using, do not go over a 10% ratio. Stir gently.

  5. Pour the wax: Once the wax has melted and is at the desired temperature, carefully pour it into the prepared container. Leave a little bit of room at the top (about half an inch).

  6. Let the wax cool: Let the candle cool and harden completely. This can take a couple of hours.

  7. Trim the wick: Once the candle has cooled, trim the wick to about ¼ inch.

  8. Enjoy your candle: Light your candle and enjoy the cozy ambiance and delightful fragrance.

Tips:

  • Experiment with different types of wax to find your favorite. Soy wax is a great option but there are several to choose from.

  • Use a thermometer to ensure the wax is at the correct temperature. This will prevent sink holes from forming in your candle.

  • If you want to add fragrance, be sure to use fragrance oils specifically designed for candle making.

  • Use caution when working with hot wax to avoid burns.

  • Have fun and get creative with your candle making!

In conclusion, candle making is a fun and rewarding activity that can provide you with personalized and relaxing home decor. With a little bit of practice and creativity, you can create your own unique candles that will bring warmth and light to your home.
